Grace & Glory History…
Grace & Glory Church grew out a handful of people who were meeting together in a home group. They knew they wanted something different, something real, but no one had any idea how to start or maintain a church.
Our first meeting as a church was on Mothers’ Day, 1986. There were 12 adults present, and the atmosphere was one of nervous excitement. I remember thinking, “We can do anything.” Of course, that was incorrect. What I should have been thinking was, “God can do anything.”
Growth was astounding the first few weeks, as our numbers seemed to double every Sunday. We moved from our first home in Pastor Steve Zimmerman’s living room to the rental house next door to the Tillmans. Within a few months we outgrew that place and had to seek bigger quarters.
Over the next 15 years, Grace & Glory moved five more times, but the biggest change, and our greatest challenge, came when our pastor resigned in 1989. God was gracious to us. One of our members, Marc Johnson, was an ordained minister. Marc agreed to help the congregation as we decided our future. As it turned out, we decided his future, as well. Within a few weeks, Marc assumed the role as pastor, and Grace & Glory was able to continue.
The church moved into our present building, as renters, in September, 2001. Only those who’ve experienced seven moves in 15 years can appreciate the joy we felt when the building became the official property of Grace & Glory Church in April, 2006. Not only is there a sense of permanence now, but having our own building has renewed our excitement, as well. Even though the congregation is 20 years old, there is a feeling of newness as we put down roots in the neighborhood.
